Common typing speed test Q&A

Find clear answers to common typing test questions, covering WPM, accuracy, errors, test behavior, and practical tips to understand your results.

How can I use this typing speed test?

To start the typing speed test, click the “Start Typing Test” button. A random text of approximately 250–280 characters will be generated in the "Text to type" area, and the elapsed time counter will begin automatically. Now its time to type! Simply start typing the same text into the input field below. Correctly typed characters are highlighted in green, while mistyped characters are highlighted in red. If you make a mistake, you can go back and fix it as you continue typing. Once you have typed the entire text exactly as shown, the test is considered complete. You can then review your typing statistics.

What does WPM mean in a typing speed test?

WPM stands for Words Per Minute and measures the keyboard typing speed. In most typing tests, one word is defined as five characters, including spaces and punctuation. WPM represents an estimate of how many words you could type in one minute at your current pace.

Why can’t I paste text into the typing test?

Pasting is disabled to ensure the typing speed test measures actual typing ability rather than copy and paste actions. This helps provide fair and accurate results for speed and accuracy.

How is typing accuracy calculated?

Typing accuracy is calculated as the percentage of correctly typed characters compared to the total number of characters typed. Mistyped characters reduce accuracy, even if they are later corrected during the test. Scores below 60% or 65% may indicate low typing accuracy.

Why does the typing test use longer text samples?

Longer text samples help produce more reliable WPM results by measuring typing speed over a longer period, allowing analysis of roughly one minute of continuous typing. Short texts can lead to inflated or unstable results, while longer passages better reflect real-world typing performance.

Are my typing test results saved?

Typing test results are stored only during the current browser session. The history resets when the page is refreshed, ensuring privacy while still allowing you to review your recent performance.
